Maybe you’ve heard the term “baby led posing” thrown around (sometimes called a “natural newborn session”), and maybe you are like most people and thought “wait, whaaaaaat does that mean? How is that any different than a ‘normal’ photography session?’” Or maybe you’ve scrolled through this site and thought - “huh, these photos look a little different than what I expect from newborn photos, but I can’t put my finger on why.” Whatever the reason, let’s talk a little about what baby led posing is, why that’s the only way I approach a newborn session, and how it turns into the most personal, beautiful, classic portraits of and for your family.

Think about this for a second: what makes your baby different from ALL the other babies? (Other than the obvious, which is being the cutest, sweetest, most amazing thing in the whole world :)) The answer lies in the details - the way she moves, his little coos, her perfectly shaped nose, the way his arm stretches over his head when he yawns, the serious face she makes when she makes eye contact with you, the way he sucks his middle two fingers, the curl of her spine, the tufts of his hair, and so on. Your baby is unique and every one of his/her details is what you want to remember.

Baby led posing is an approach to newborn (and baby) photography that captures these details perfectly. Your baby is safely positioned to allow him/her to wiggle, stretch, and move in ways natural to his/her body. We capture all the beauty that is unique to your baby.

As opposed to traditional posed newborn photography, where baby is carefully curled and posed into specific positions, baby led posing allows your baby to show his or her natural movement and positioning, which leads to more personal photographs. Your baby’s portraits will hit every sentimental nerve in your body, and forever bring you back to those fleeting moments when they were tiny.

Baby led posing works GREAT with siblings (even furry ones!) because it doesn’t force anyone into unnatural or uncomfortable poses. We ask big brother or sister to interact with baby in the way that’s natural and comfortable to them. This makes for a session that is more fun for everyone! No one leaves our session feeling uncomfortable. When you look back at your photos you see genuine smiles and expressions, not discomfort or frustration written all over your toddler’s face.

And let us not forget the parent shots - which are some of my favorite parts of any baby session! Parents, I hear you - photo sessions are uncomfortable! You don’t quite know what to do with your body or your face, and the idea of having to pose yourself makes you shudder. On the flip side, the stiff and posed prom type photos of the past are meme fodder, and you want none of that.

So let me tell you a little secret - you are never more beautiful, comfortable, and relaxed than you are snuggling the little human you made. When you are with your baby, happiness and beauty radiate out of everyone’s pores. (For real. Look at these families - radiant is the word!).
